6 things you can do right now to look better in your profile photos

I’m pretty sure I don’t need to tell you that your dating photos are an absolutely critical part of your dating profile but you may not know just how critical. Recent research has concluded that your written profile counts for less that 10% of what people think of you? So, with that in mind, I’m going to share 5 simple pro photographer tips for creating a dating profile photo that is going to help you stand out from the crowd and win more dates.

Create the right vibe

The mood of the photo is something most people don’t think about but it’s crucial to get right for dating photos. Imagine if someone takes a photo of you while you are worrying about that meeting you have to get to, trust me it shows on your face, and it’s not a vibe that is going to attract people to your profile. Now imagine that you are thinking about someone you have a serious crush on. Now we are getting somewhere. Straightaway your pupils are dilating, your face lights up and you’re smiling the kind of smile that is going to attract people to your profile. So when you’re getting your profile photo taken, don’t think about that proposal you need to get finished, think about that someone who makes you smile.

Get ready for your close up

If you’re worried about double chins or unwanted bulges in your photos, here’s a trick that pro portrait photographers use to capture their clients at their most flattering angle. They like to get slightly above their subject if possible and if you’re a woman or girl will probably ask you to angle your torso so that one shoulder is towards the camera and one is away from it. Just think red carpet poses, they’re all doing it and there’s a reason for that. It’s simply the most flattering pose. For guys, especially if you’re not as buff as you’d like, facing the camera straight on will make you look bigger and musclier.

Embrace colour

If you want your profile photo to jump out from the sea of other dating photographs, wear something brightly coloured. Seriously, a pop of colour will catch people’s eye and get them homing in on your profile. If you’re really into this idea, the best colour to wear is red of course. Red is for passion and danger and will more easily attract potential love interests. Now if you’re anything like me and are hardly ever out of black, read on to find out what you can do.

Make your background work for you

Brightly coloured clothes not your thing? That’s no problem, you just need to get a bit more creative. Head out and make it your job to find some colourful locations instead. As the UK’s only dedicated dating photographer, I spend my life looking out for interesting, colourful shoot locations. What I find works the best is colourful street art, small markets, canal paths, public gardens, trendy cafes and shops, billboards or even the side of a Mr Whippy van. Once you start to look round you, you’ll be surprised at what you can use around you to add some colour and life to your photos.

Let your personality shine through

One of the hardest yet best things you can do to bring your dating photos to life, is to let you personality shine through if possible. Nailing this will help add value to your written profile. Your dating photos should be giving people big clues about what you’re like as a person. So how to do this? The easiest way is through the clothes you’re wearing. Think carefully about what side of your personality you want to show and wear clothes that help you do that. Another way to bring elements of your personality into the photo, while giving you something to do with your hands (great if you’re nervous in front of the camera) is to use a good prop. Make a quick list of the 6 things you can’t live without and then pick one or two of those to include in your photo. Typical props that my clients use include hats, books, newspapers, big headphones, glasses and bikes.

Be confident and smile

The most important thing you can do is just have laugh with your photographer and let them capture you being natural, happy and confident.
