Best West End Theatre Shows for a Date in London

Does the person you’re dating really love theatre? Treating them to a show is a great way to show your affection, and to enjoy a nice evening out together. Below are our recommendations for the best West End shows in London to see on a date, with tips on how to get the best value tickets.

Finding cheap West End theatre tickets in London

It’s not a huge secret that you can find cheap tickets for London theatre by buying on the day of the performance. However it’s certainly worth being reminded of, and knowing where to get hold of these tickets.

The best place to go to find cheap theatre tickets is to the ‘tkts’ booth in Leicester Square, which offers discounts of up to 50% on the day of the performance, and even up to a week in advance.

Match.com’s top 5 London West End shows to see on a date

1) Once, Phoenix Theatre

Based on an Oscar-winning film of the same name, Once tells the tale of an Irish busker and a Czech girl who meet, by chance, through their love of music. Worth seeing for the multi-talented actor-musicians, and one to take your date to if they’re a fan of modern day love stories.

2) Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Theatre Royal Drury Lane

With an Academy Award under his belt for directing American Beauty, and big budget films like Skyfall, there’s no doubt expectations are high when Sam Mendes directs a musical. Charlie & The Chocolate Factory does not disappoint! Anyone who’s a fan of Roald Dahl has to see this.

3) Jersey Boys, Piccadilly Theatre

This documentary-style musical follows the story of a 1960s rock ‘n roll group, and is definitely worth seeing. Don’t just take our word for it, this show is receiving rave reviews from all corners, and has won 55 major awards worldwide. A sure hit for any date who loves musicals.

4) The Lion King, Lyceum Theatre

The fact that this show is now in its 15th year at the Lyceum Theatre speaks volumes. An enchanting mix of colour, effects and music, with some great costume design, make this a show not to miss out on. It’s hard to go wrong with this one – I mean, who doesn’t like the film?

5) Matilda, Cambridge Theatre

Our second Roald Dahl recommendation to make this top 5 list, but one that is very much deserved with outstanding set design and impressive choreography. What makes this show truly unmissable though are the music and lyrics written by comedian and musician Tim Minchin. Anyone who is a fan of him will love this show, but then pretty much anyone who loves theatre will enjoy Matilda!
