Last week I headed out for a date with my Polish companion who has lived in London for the last couple of years. Normally Italian food is always first on our list for date food, but wanting to surprise him I scoured the internet for London’s best Polish restaurant and found Daquise well reviewed.
Situated in the buzzing neighbourhood of Thurloe Street, Daquise is a charming Polish restaurant in the heart of London’s museum district.
Serving traditional Polish cuisine, this bijou eatery is a great choice for Poles in Britain who are craving a taste of home, or a chance for non-natives to try out some Polish classics.
We visited for dinner on a Friday evening and found Daquise to be a good balance of atmospheric, but not too loud, with waiting staff who were attentive without being intrusive – the perfect date conditions.
As a non-Pole I wanted to do some pre-date research into the menu before arriving, and was pleased to find a sample version of the menu available on the website, but it’s worth saying there is a much larger version available in the restaurant, as well as a daily specials board.
The menu includes Polish staples such as borscht, pierogi and zrazy wolowe, but if you’re feeling a little bamboozled by the choice of unfamiliar dishes, the waiting staff are happy to advice. To drink there’s a good selection of reasonably priced wine, beer and of course vodka. My date’s only issue was that he liked the sound of everything so much he couldn’t choose.
The food is simple and home cooked, but served with real flourish which makes the experience special (and ideal for a date). The steak tartare comes deconstructed and prepared next to the table, while the pierogi and soup are delivered straight from pans to plates by the chef.
A meal is never finished without a dessert, and Daquise doesn’t disappoint. The pierogi stuffed with fresh strawberries is delicious, but if you can’t face another dumpling, the selection of cakes are the perfect sweet treat to end the night on.
Overall I’d highly recommend Daquise as a great date venue whether you’re dating a Pole, taking someone you’ve met though dating sites, or just fancy trying something new.
