Get Cultural with these four theatre dates in Liverpool

Liverpool is graced with many theatres that offer a great way to spend an evening. Below we’ve suggested four top theatres in Liverpool that are perfect for you and a date to enjoy a West End show or an intimate local production.

The Royal Court Theatre

1 Roe St, Liverpool, L1 1HL

The Royal Court (pictured above) has existed in one form or another for 100 years, and was the venue in which Dame Judi Dench made her debut in 1957. In more recent times the theatre has undergone further transformation that sets it apart from other theatres, not only in Liverpool, but also the UK.

Instead of the traditional theatre seating, the stalls section of the theatre has been replaced in a cabaret style with individual tables. This makes it ideal to have a pre-theatre meal with your date, before sitting back to enjoy the performance on stage. If you prefer the traditional set up, the Circle and Balcony have maintained the normal seating arrangement and offer great views of the stage to enjoy the show.

The performances at the Royal Court have also taken on a unique style, in that they are performed in Liverpool starring Liverpool actors and written by Liverpool writers. This has proved to be a winning combination and the theatre continues to produce entertaining productions perfect for a date!

The new Everyman Theatre

5-9 Hope St, Liverpool, Merseyside, L1 9BH

Having only re-opened its doors in early 2014, this theatre sits on the exact site of the old Everyman Theatre, using an incredible 25,000 bricks from the original building (which was once a church).

The theatre plays host to a variety of productions including classics such as ‘Twelfth Night’, along with more contemporary theatre and a selection of musicals, giving you and your date plenty of options.

The basement of the theatre contains the ‘Everyman Basement Bistro’ which serves a selection of meals, sharing boards and delicious desserts; giving you and your date the chance to enjoy a meal before venturing into the production. If you’d prefer something lighter, then there’s also the theatre bar which is open before, during the interval, and after the show.

Unity Theatre Liverpool

1 Hope Place, Liverpool, L1 9BG

Unlike many other theatres in Liverpool, the Unity theatre offers a small and intimate setting for its plays. Capacity is only 180 seats and the stories unfold on a floor stage offering the opportunity for everyone in the audience to feel close to the action.

Having recently won an award for Best Performing Venue, the theatre is dedicated to bringing high quality performing arts and hosts a calendar of events including drama, musicals and even some stand-up. There’s a theatre bar with a varied menu, which is a great way to relax and have a drink before the show.

Liverpool Empire Theatre

Lime Street, Liverpool L1 1JE

The Liverpool Empire Theatre has been a mainstay of the city’s theatre scene for over 100 years, with an impressive list of past productions and artists including Laurel and Hardy, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Garland.

The theatre is the largest two-tier theatre in the UK with over 2,300 seats and today features a calendar that rivals the best in the West End, including Singin’ in the Rain, Fame and the Lion King. This gives you and your date the perfect opportunity to see some fantastic shows right on your door step.

The theatre is also home to ‘Autograph, a café-bar that is perfect for enjoying a pre-theatre meal. The menu offers a variety of dishes, with traditional and local favourites in mind, and the bar serves a selection of wines, beers and soft drinks.
