Ideas for dates in Birmingham

Ideas for dates in Birmingham

Accents aside, Birmingham is one of the biggest and best cities in the UK. Often called the ‘second city’ (after London, of course), Brum town is full of exciting adventures and places to take someone out to get to know them a little better. Birmingham is a city shining with hidden dating gems, from the charm of the Jewellery Quarter to the heady delights of the Hippodrome. Whether you’re stuck for date night ideas or are trying to take a girl, guy or non-binary person out on a first date, here at Match we’ve got plenty of ideas coming your way for days and nights out in Bham – and don’t worry, we’ve got ideals other than bars for the non-drinkers, so read on and enjoy!

For green daters: Birmingham Nature Centre

Pershore Road, Birmingham Area, Birmingham B5 7RL

There’s nothing more romantic than solidifying your love by sponsoring an animal. Think about it! Who needs anniversary reminders when you’re getting postal updates about your alpaca ageing comfortably thanks to you. Ok, maybe nature centre’s or parks aren’t exactly everyone’s idea of a perfect date night, but if your date is an animal and nature lover then taking a trip out of the Birmingham city centre is definitely worth it. Just two miles away, the Nature Centre has a plethora of adorable, fluffy creatures to do puppy dog eyes so you don’t have to. For those who are more cold-blooded (but not cold-hearted), there’s also a good few endangered reptiles to watch and admire from afar.

For the romantics: The Jewellery Quarter

75-79 Vyse St, Hockley, Birmingham, West Midlands B18 6HA

The jewellery quarter is the place to go if you’re trying to impress on your first dating in Birmingham. With St. Paul’s Square nearby and a whole host of gorgeous Georgian architecture, you’ll have more than your beautiful date to stare at. Go browsing for fine jewellery or take an afternoon stroll and pop into some shops and discover a little bit more about the craft itself (what’s better than learning and dating all at once?). Be careful if you’re taking a long time girlfriend, boyfriend or partner here though, they might suspect you’re about to pop that question amongst the diamond rings. If you’re looking for a more fun-filled evening out, make a quick visit to the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists gallery after a candle-lit dinner.

For indulgent dates: Cadbury World

Linden Rd, Birmingham B30 1JR

Hot dates deserve hot chocolate; that’s our belief anyway. Chocolate has long been linked to feelings of well-being by scientists and it’s been cited as an aphrodisiac for centuries. So surrounding yourselves with chocolate should add something extra special to your date. Willy Wonka doesn’t have a patch on Cadbury World where you can discover the origins of the cocoa bean in the Aztec Jungle before jumping on-board the magical Cadabra ride and watching chocolatiers demonstrate traditional (and can we say magical) chocolate making skills. Stop off for a couple of drinks or some food afterwards for a completely unique first date experience.

For evening dates: Birmingham Royal Ballet

Hurst St, Birmingham, West Midlands B5 4TB

For those who love an evening of culture and beauty, the Royal Ballet is always a great option. It’s true that some people like experience dates more than just going out for a couple of drinks or exploring around a museum for hours. With over 500,000 visitors each year, a visit to the Royal Ballet at the Birmingham Hippodrome is one of the more cultural dating options in the city, and should guarantee you some brownie points with the ladies. Famed for the ‘startling energy’ of their performances, the ballet has a devoted following in Birmingham but has also toured around the USA, Japan and Hong Kong and features ballerinas from all over the world.

For summer dates: Boating along the canals

Various locations in Birmingham

Birmingham is famous for its network of canals – actually, Brum has more miles of canals than Venice itself! There’s present ample opportunities for enjoying the outdoors from cycling to strolling alongside the water. Boating along the canal either in a barge or a hired boat is guaranteed to make an impression, and is ideal for a summer’s day date. For the really adventurous, navigating the waterways in a canoe is an alternative way to see Birmingham that might help break the ice on that all important first date. It’s a truly unique way to date, if you’re into waterways at least! If you can’t get to the city of love, Birmingham might well be the next best option.

For the music fans: The Night Owl

17-18 Lower Trinity St, Deritend, Birmingham B9 4AG, UK

Not only is The Night Owl a club, it’s also a music venue with a great chill out zone on the second floor to look over your favourite new band or sit down with your date pre-gig to get to know them a little better on comfy sofas. The beer garden is also a more secluded spot to share stories or even steal a kiss in the summertime. What’s even better, The Night Owl is just a couple of minutes from Digbeth. If you’re newer to Birmingham, Digbeth is a must-see, date or otherwise. With a plethora of treats in the Custard Factory to Ghetto Golf, Digbeth is one of the most exciting places in Birmingham and is perfect for a daytime-to-evening date with someone special who loves culture, art and an all-round good time.

For the theys/thems and queers of all kinds: Quarter Horse Coffee Roasters

88-90 Bristol Street, Birmingham, B5 7AH

Admit it, most queers love coffee! And Quarter Horse doesn’t miss the mark – when it comes to coffee or interiors. As the go-to roasters in Birmingham, Quarter Horse Coffee has about ten different coffee bean varieties to try out, great brunch offerings and a roof terrace to take a girl, guy or enby on a sweet daytime date. Friendly and LGBTQI+ inclusive, you won’t have to worry about being seen here (unless your ex shows up!). To be honest, we’re not sure there’s much that can beat a brunch date in Brum – lovely food and plenty of things to look out the window at!
