Just found out that your date supports the red or blue half of Manchester? Check out our essential guide below to get the low down on both teams, and make sure you get off to a winning start.
Home is where the heart is
Manchester City F.C. – Etihad Stadium
After 80 years at Maine Road, City moved into the Etihad Stadium in 2003, securing their first title for over 44 years in 2012 – definitely a good talking point for any City fan. If you fancy dropping hints, find out if your date also knows that the stadium is licenced to hold wedding ceremonies – a dream day for diehard city fans!
Manchester United F.C – Old Trafford
Nicknamed the ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ by United legend Bobby Charlton, Old Trafford has been the home of Manchester United for over 100 years and in that time has been the home of 20 league title winning teams. United actually shared City’s stadium for 8 years between 1941 and 1949 after WW2, hard to imagine given the bitter rivalry present today.

Manchester City F.C.
Do Mention – Beating United to the league title with 1 minute of the 2011-2012 season remaining
Not content with securing their first league title in 44 years, City decided to do it the hard way – coming from behind to score 2 added time goals and snatching the title away from United with less than a minute of the season remaining. The perfect way to win it for City fans.
Don’t mention – Anything before 2008
City fans have suffered their fair share over the years, including becoming only the second team ever to win a European cup and also be relegated to the third tier of English Football. Better to stick to their present day accolades.
Manchester United F.C.
Do mention – Their record-breaking 20 league titles
Despite losing the title to City the previous season, United secured their 20th league title in 2012-2013, becoming the most successful team in English Football history whilst also overtaking another bitter rival Liverpool F.C. as the team with the most titles. Sure to put a smile on the face of any United fan.
Don’t mention – Their ‘Noisy Neighbours’
City have proven to be more than just noisy neighbours in the last few years, and given United’s current form, the less said about the blue half of Manchester, the better.
