Wedding anniversary gifts by year

Wedding anniversary gifts by year

Giving a gift on your wedding anniversary shows thought and consideration. It also serves as a reminder that marrying your partner was the best decision you ever made. A great way to reveal your romantic side is to give a traditional gift based on the ‘element’ assigned to each anniversary year. Here’s our guide to the best gifts to give on significant anniversaries.

First wedding anniversary gift: Paper

Don’t take paper as an excuse to give a card as your ‘gift’. This is the end of your first year together, when you are hopefully still in that honeymoon phase, so why not try something ultra-romantic like writing a poem or painting a picture? Or you could print out a beautiful photo of the two of you and get it framed? Tickets to a play or concert are also a good idea, or if you’re really feeling flush, plane or Eurostar tickets to a romantic destination. The key is to be creative and think about what your partner both needs and will enjoy.

5th wedding anniversary gift: Wood

Wood requires a bit of ‘thinking outside of the box’. You might see the humour in giving a wooden (and well-endowed) fertility statue but the recipient won’t be so tickled. Instead, try to give a gift that shows a bit of imagination, like a weekend away to a country cottage with nearby woods, or if your other half is green-fingered, an exotic plant or tree. If you’re on a budget you can show your affection with a jewellery box, cheese board or a wooden wine box encasing a bottle of their favourite plonk.

10th wedding anniversary gift: Tin

Tin is not the most inspiring of materials for a gift, especially one that marks 10 years of marriage, and to achieve the desired result you may have to get a little creative. While a tin of chocolates or sweets is a good starter, it’s not very lavish for a milestone anniversary. Think about all the things you can put in a tin – jewellery, candles, engraved champagne glasses, a special book, tickets…there are many options. It’s also possible to find beautiful jewellery made from tin and you can have it engraved for that personal touch. If tin doesn’t appeal, the modern-day gift to give after 10 years is a piece of diamond jewellery, while the traditional gemstone for a decade of wedlock is black onyx.

25th wedding anniversary gift: Silver

Reaching quarter of a century of marriage deserves a precious metal in its honour, and silver lends itself well to gift ideas. You could arrange to have professional photographs taken of your family and present them to your partner in customised silver picture frames, for example. Additionally, you can buy personalised silver-label champagne and serve it in silver champagne flutes as you enjoy a romantic evening together. Giving a silver gift is also your chance to scour the antiques shops for a unique piece that will really show that you made the effort.

50th wedding anniversary gift: Gold

When you reach the big fifty of your blissful union, you should pull out all the stops to ensure your anniversary is a memorable one. And nothing says this better than the gift of gold. Gold jewellery is a classic after half a century, but you can also branch out and give a customised golden photo album with a picture from each year of your married life. If you’re interested in travel, a trip-of-a-lifetime holiday to a gold-themed destination such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or the Gold Coast of Australia is the ultimate gift.
