Men – why your height doesn’t have to hold you back when it comes to dating
You don’t have to be a certain height to ride the dating carousel – love can find you however tall you are. If you’ve ever felt as though your height is holding you back when it comes to finding the date of your dreams, think again says Kate Taylor of match.com.
Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Martin Scorsese, Mark Wahlberg. What do all these men have in common? They’re all 5’ 8” or under. But that fact hasn’t held them back from winning the hearts of some of the world’s most beautiful women. If you’re (literally) rubbing shoulders with men like these in terms of height, don’t let it hold you back. Here’s how you can stop being self-conscious about your height and maximise your chances of dating success.
Positive Mental Attitude
Ever heard of Short Man Syndrome? Where men who feel they lack height deliberately over-compensate for it in terms of determination and courage? Napoleon was said to suffer from it, as do Lewis Hamilton, Ryan Seacrest and Mark Owen, who have all worked twice as hard to achieve success.
It’s a wonderful asset, one that the overly confident taller men can never develop. In fact, I want you to develop Short Dater Syndrome. Instead of being drawn to you because of your height, make women become drawn to you because of your charm, your success, your sense of humour, your confidence. Work hard. Don’t play down your lack of height in your online dating profile (and never, ever be tempted to lie) – instead, play it up as an asset.
Write a cheeky advert that tells women that finally, here’s a man they can date in flat, comfy shoes. Admit that you can’t help them reach tall shelves but they won’t have to stretch for a kiss either. Be bold, and confident. If you’re afraid you might not show up on online dating searches because your height puts you out of some women’s search criteria, contact more women yourself. Work harder. This is the attitude that will bring you success in love – and indeed, in all aspects of life.
Find a celebrity alter-ego
We’ve already listed many men here who are pocket-sized sex symbols. If you’ve never noticed they’re short, it’s because they have learned to dress themselves taller. Do the same. Find a celebrity with the same vital statistics as yourself, then study what they wear. Vertical stripes? Outfits all one colour? Shorter jackets? Narrow lapels? Copy their look when you go shopping. You can add the impression of height and stature just by what you wear. Think about Prince for example – did he hide away in muted jumpers and baggy jeans? No. He rocked it in purple! But his suits were form-fitted and he wore a raised heel. These are tricks you can copy. If you’re at a loss, why not book a personal shopper (it’s free!) at a department store?
Work that body
You might be shorter than some, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be in great shape. I’m going to be blunt here and tell you that a lack of height does mean you don’t have the same leeway as big men when it comes to weight. Your success is going to come in being in GREAT shape. No, don’t hit me – hit the gym! Work out until you have the best body you can have. Muscles are manly, and many women would swap a flabby six-footer for a buff shorter guy. Plus, exercising will help your confidence and self-esteem.
Choose your women wisely
Don’t make a point of dating women who are all statuesque giants. Date – literally – at your own level. If you’re 5’ 6”, you’re going to feel pretty big to a girl who’s 5’ 2”, so search for those girls. You don’t need every date to be a reminder that you’re smaller. The right woman for you will make you feel like you’re ten feet tall, in every way.
