First Date Make-up Tips
Beauty and fashion blogger Megan Donnelly shares her tips on how to create the perfect first date look.
On a first date it’s important not to over do your make up; you should try and aim for a sexier, natural version of yourself.
This means you need to nail the basics of the ‘no make up’ look. You also want to be confident that your make-up will last all evening; so prepping the skin is very important!
With that in mind, I’ve compiled my favourite products to create an alluring natural make up look.
Prep your skin
Clarins Beauty Flash Balm gives a fresh radiance to skin – make sure to use this just before you put on your foundation. Apply a very thin layer (without massaging) over the face, neck and eye area.
Apply a thin layer of foundation using either a foundation brush or your fingers: start from the centre of the face and blend outwards. Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundation illuminates, highlights and beautifies the skin – perfect for first date make up. Depending on how much coverage you need, try to apply a few thin layers of foundation rather than applying lots in one go.
Conceal any blemishes
Mac Studio Fix concealer can be used as an under-eye concealer as well as a cover up for blemishes or redness. The key is to blend your concealer into your foundation seamlessly, so take your time here. Use a dabbing motion with your ring finger to ensure no heavy application.
Lock in your make-up
In order to achieve dewy (not oily) skin, lightly dust some translucent powder down your t-zone and over any blemishes to lock in the coverage and fool your date into thinking you’ve had your full 8 hours. I love MAC’s Translucent Powder for this.
Sun kiss your skin
The revolutionary NARS Laguna Bronzer and Orgasm Blusher work together to give a natural sun kissed look. Make sure to tap off any excess powder before you apply to the face; use the bronzer sparingly in the hollow of your cheeks and temples, brush lightly on the nose and anywhere else the sun would naturally kiss your face. Then pull a huge over-exaggerated smile and dap a light amount of blusher on the apples of your cheeks.
Highlight your features
Using Benefit’s Watts Up highlighter, brush a small amount down the centre of the nose, cheekbones, the arch of the eyebrow and the inner corner of each eye – very Blake Lively!
Define your eyebrows
Properly defining your eyebrows will frame your face and make sure your date becomes completely lost in your eyes. Use an eyebrow pencil – MAC Lingering Pencil is a great starter pencil for beginners, and follow the direction of the hair starting from the inner eyebrow. Work the pencil in long light strokes drawing your brows outwards to the end corner.
Accentuate your eyes
To create a sultry smokey eye I use Stila In the Light eye shadow palette.
Apply the matte nude shade all over the lid and then a shade slightly darker to the crease. Blending is key here; get a clean brush and blend all over each lid! Use a sharpened brown kohl eye pencil and run a thin line from the inner corner of the eye along the top eyelashes (don’t worry about it being neat), then use a smudging brush to blend the pencil stroke upwards onto the eyelid to get a smokey eyeliner effect – no harsh lines.
Use any residue from the smudging brush to run the brush very lightly under your lower eyelashes. Finally apply a light coating of mascara; Benefit Bad Girl mascara gives you just the right amount of length and volume.
Less is more lips
Again, following the ‘less is more’ mantra, I would use a nude lip pencil to softly outline the lips: MAC Pro Longwear Etcetera is my go-to nude lip pencil. Finally, go over with a matte lip balm – Burt’s Bees is a classic.
I created a similar look for a blog post; here is the beautiful model, Jessie with her first date make-up.
Go knock ‘em dead!
