Step 4: How to choose the perfect profile picture
Having a photo on your profile can dramatically increase the number of people who view your page. But first impressions are everything, so it’s important that your picture says the right things about you.
Use a quality photo
With a profile picture, quality is everything, and it’s important that viewers of your page can see what you really look like. Choose a headshot that clearly shows your face smiling and in a flattering light (natural light is best), plus one full-length shot and another that shows you doing something you enjoy such as surfing or snowboarding.
Some dating advice for the girls – make sure make-up is subtle, or as you would normally wear it – the same applies to clothing. Men, meanwhile, should ensure the photo isn’t one of you shying away under a hat, huge sunglasses or a scarf which hides your face.
Pick a recent picture
Imagine the shock when you turn up, expecting to meet a dashing prince charming, only to discover prince charming has aged ten years. Or discovering that the woman you’ve been chatting to isn’t quite the spring chicken her photo would imply.
Remember, online dating isn’t about creating a fantasy version of yourself – it’s a way to meet people with whom you can build a genuine relationship. There’s no point using photos from 20 years (or 20lbs) ago. There are so many people looking for love online now that you don’t have to exaggerate – be yourself and someone will adore you just the way you are.
Choose a picture that shows the real you
It’s all very well posing for hours on end for the perfect picture, or editing your favourite photo on your computer, but that’s not who you really are.
Definitely don’t Photoshop your picture. People want to see the real you and both parties are much more likely to be pleased with what they see when you meet face to face if you’ve both posted images that show you as you are.
Your profile pic should portray you as someone who’d make a good partner, so make sure you look comfortable. Also try to avoid wearing too much make up. A good guideline would be a picture of you wearing the sort of thing you would choose to wear on a first date.
If you’re smiling, your photo will give the impression that you’re a happy and friendly individual – and that’s always attractive. Research shows that the best photo a woman can use is one in which she is smiling into the camera.
