Coffee dates can be a great place to first meet your date: they’re casual, can last as long as you want, and are less expensive than a first date at a bar.

Suggesting a coffee date doesn’t mean agreeing to meet up at your local coffee chain though; you want to keep it casual but you don’t want to appear like you put no thought into the date.

We’ve done all the thinking for you and reviewed our top three coffee shops in Edinburgh to provide the perfect back-drop to your daytime date.
We’ve also provided some info on their food offerings, just in case

Elephant House

The Elephant House is one of the best coffee shops to go on a date in Edinburgh. The shop has been a place for inspiration for many famous writers including J.K Rowling, who wrote many of her early novels whilst sipping on a cup of coffee here.

The coffee shop has beautiful views over the Edinburgh castle, and if you’re not ready to go home after a few coffees, then the mellow vibes during the day turn livelier in the evening with live music.

The menu is varied with an extensive selection of coffees and teas, as well as mouth-watering hot chocolates and a few alcoholic specialities such as their Chocolate Devil (made with hot chocolate, spiced rum and Tia Maria).

If you and your date get peckish then they serve some delicious light bites and starters, as well as pizzas and heartier main dishes like burgers and homemade shepherd’s pie.

We never said something that starts off as a coffee date can’t turn into a dinner date…!

Peter’s Yard

Peter’s Yard is a café and bakery renowned for its delicious food and sweet treats.

This style-conscious Swedish bakery/café is light and spacious with comfy couches to relax on with your date. You can even dine alfresco with fleecy blankets to keep you warm.

Their selection of cakes is impressive, with some inventive creations like fig and chocolate loaf, as well as an ample spread of traditional Swedish bakes. Their best-seller, and our personal favourite, is their cardamom buns which are delicious. For an extra treat we recommend the hot chocolate flavoured with cardamom to accompany your cake.

If you prefer savoury over sweet and time is edging over towards lunch, you and your date can share their famous sourdough pizzas with fresh toppings. Our pick would be the Parma ham.

Brew Lab

Brew Lab is an artisan coffee bar in the middle of the Edinburgh University area. Coffee is at the forefront of what they offer, creating innovative brewing techniques for different bean and grind types to deliver fantastic coffee and a great experience.

They brew two different coffees every day, each brewed specifically to bring out their individual characteristics, and they have a state-of-the-art coffee machine which produces their daily espresso blend.

Whilst their main focus is coffee, they also don’t disappoint with food. Their selection of treats promote the best local high-quality produce Edinburgh has to offer, with hot chocolate from Edward and Irwyn and amazing breads and pastries from Le Petit Francais. They also make rustic, fresh and tasty sandwiches on-site.
