Step 3: Top tips for writing your online dating profile

Do you want your dating profile to get you more quality matches? Then you need to ask yourself: what message is it sending?

Your profile is your one chance to showcase your best photos and what makes you interesting. Is it doing the best job it can? When you sign up and answer those initial questions, are you considering them carefully? Do the words you choose paint an accurate picture of who you are and the person you hope to find?

1. Consider your answers carefully

When you first sign up with match.com, you’ll be asked to give some basic info about yourself. You’ll be able to pick the words that best describe you, and give others an idea of the things you’re interested in, be it eating out, dancing or volunteering. You’ll also be asked questions about the type of person you’re looking to date.

The answers you give will help people to connect with you, whether that’s through advanced searches, or by seeing your profile as one of their daily matches or the matches we recommend to each member. That’s why it’s important to answer these questions accurately and honestly for the best possible chance of meeting your ideal match.

If you’re a lover of Bikram Yoga, can’t stand smokers and definitely want children in the future, it’s easy to identify potential deal breakers by simply reading someone’s online dating profile and can therefore avoid embarking in the wrong relationship altogether, so think carefully about what your profile really says about you.

2. Write about your interests

After you’ve filled in your basic information, you can add more detail in the “A few words about me” and “More About Me” sections of your profile. Use the latter to describe the things you’re passionate about such as your interests and hobbies and your favourite places to visit. It’s a good opportunity to give people an idea of what you do in your spare time as well as how you spend your working day.

If you’re interested in travelling, why not take this opportunity to discuss your favourite destination, or the most amazing things you’ve discovered around the globe?

Alternatively, if you’ve said reading is a passion of yours, give your profile viewers a brief review of your favourite novel. Use open questions and make it easy for others to ask your about your interests using these interest-writing tips.

3. Write a unique description about yourself

Sometimes the most challenging part of completing a profile on dating sites is having to write a personal ad. This is the section where you can describe yourself in terms of your character and explain what you are looking for from a potential partner or date. But with so many profiles on match.com, it’s important to make your dating profile stand out from the crowd. You are unique, so make sure your persona shines through and that fellow members can get a feel for the real you.

Try to avoid clichés and overused phrases such as “easy-going” and “looking for love”. Instead, consider what makes you different from everybody else – are you just crazy about peanut butter sandwiches? Do you have a secret passion for Woody Allen movies? Above all, be sure to inject humour to show people how friendly, fun and approachable you are.

Have a look at what other members are writing for some inspiration, or ask your friends to describe you. Remember that most members don’t have time to read every ad they see so tend to scan them. With this is mind it’s good to use ‘buzz words’ that stand out, for example place names, film titles, football teams…whatever will make someone stop and linger on your profile.

4. Give your profile an intriguing headline

Giving your profile a headline is the perfect chance to make your profile distinctive. Consider what you’re all about and what it is you’re looking for, and make sure your headline reflects this.

The most effective headlines are those that are intriguing and honest. Why not go with lyrics from a song that sum up your personality or attitude to life? Alternatively, make it brief and to the point; capture your passion and character and make it easier for people to find you.

5. Upload a profile picture

It perhaps comes as no surprise that the profiles that attract the most attention have a photo as well as a well-written profile.
