Free dating ideas for art & culture lovers in Manchester

Manchester is a great place to visit, even more so if you are into art and culture. There’s no need for a wallet full of cash, there’s plenty of free places to go to on a date. So, if either you or your date is into art and culture, these free dates ideas in Manchester are sure winners.

Free Museums

Museums are underrated as a good venue for a date. A visit to the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester is far from dull as you explore how science, innovation and industry have created modern society and continues to shape it. Other free venues in Manchester are the Lowry at Salford Quays and the Imperial War Museum, both of which are fascinating. Want something a little different? Head to the ‘People’s History Museum’, it’s situated in a former hydraulic pumping station. This free museum is a chronicle of working class people over the last 200 years and shows how people used to work and live.

If you are both into history, another great spot is the Manchester Museum. They hold continuous exhibitions throughout the year. The exhibition of mummified animals called ‘Gifts to the Gods’ is one of our favourites. It’s a collection of mummified creatures from cats to crocodiles – maybe not one for the faint hearted so be sure to warn your date first!

Free Art Galleries

The beauty of visiting an art gallery is that there’s a natural conversation flow. You can browse around together discussing your favourite pieces and artists. Even if you don’t know your Picasso from your 5 year old nephew’s effort, everyone can appreciate the beauty of a good painting. You may even discover an artist that you didn’t know or appreciate before.

The Lowry houses the largest public collection of paintings by the famous Salford born artist L. S. Lowry. You can kill two birds with one stone and pay a visit to the war museum too which is a short walk away. All of these places have a cafe where you can you can sit down and relax with your date. With the main event of your date being free, you can splash out on a coffee or two and perhaps a cheeky slice of cake.
