Social distancing and self-isolation don’t sound like they’ll be good news for singles looking for a date. But despite the fact people can’t physically meet right now, dating hasn’t slowed down. In fact, this is the perfect time to get creative with news ways of getting to know someone. So it’s worth getting on board with some fun virtual dates!
Virtual dating is having a video chat with a potential partner. And it’s worth thinking about two things when you plan your date: production values and creativity.
Though it’s tempting to spend all day every day in your PJs right now, it’s worth getting dressed up even for a virtual date – and you should consider exactly what your date will see.
Think about what is going to be in your background. Keep it simple, and make sure you’re not pointing the camera at the loo or that pile of dirty washing.
Set your laptop at eye level: it makes for a more flattering angle than looking up at your chin.
Last, consider the lighting. If you’re planning to chat during the day face outwards towards a window to get good natural light – don’t have the sun light behind you. If you’re ‘meeting’ at night make sure you there’s a lamp behind the screen so you’re well lit.
The most important rule about virtual dating is exactly the same as real-life dating: have fun! Virtual dates are a great way to get to know someone without the added pressure of meeting in person.
Why not play a game with your date? You could go old school with virtual charades, or get a little more daring a round of ‘never have I ever…’. It’s up to you!
If you’re feeling nervous why not create a virtual ‘double date’ with a friend each? There’s no better way to get a second opinion from your bestie.
If your first date goes well you could also try cooking together next time, or maybe ordering the same takeaway at the same time so you’re ‘sharing’ a meal! It’s not quite the real thing, but remember there are definitely plus points about getting to know your date slowly
So, enjoy the flirtation of a virtual date. And if you connect, there’s a good chance you’ll be enjoying their company IRL as soon as all this is over. Happy dating!
